BBC World Service is returning its visualised podcast The Mangione Trial to provide coverage of the Luigi Mangione trial in New York this September. Presenter Jordan Dunbar will report from the Manhattan courtroom and attend hearings in person to track evidence and legal arguments. The series follows the criminal case involving the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, charges which Mangione denies.

New episodes begin airing on 11 August to provide case context before the state trial starts in early September. These lead-in episodes include an examination of pretty privilege and its impact on public perception and courtroom outcomes. Jordan Dunbar also reports on the online interest in Mangione's prison mailbag and the legal implications of his correspondence. A further episode features legal experts discussing the process of selecting an impartial jury given the level of press coverage surrounding the suspect.

Podcast editor Clare Fordham stated that the production intends to provide detailed information to counter online misinformation. The content will be distributed via BBC Sounds and other podcast platforms. Visual versions of the episodes will be hosted on the BBC World Service YouTube channel.

Coverage from the courtroom will begin in early September with an update on jury selection. The production involves original reporting and expert analysis of the proceedings in New York.
