BBC Radio 4 and Intrigue have commissioned a ten part investigative podcast series titled Intrigue: A 9/11 Story. Produced by journalist Jane McMullen, the series follows 18 months of research into the orchestration of the September 11 attacks. The production focuses on the alleged involvement of the Saudi Arabian government, noting that 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi nationals.
The series utilizes interviews with former FBI agents, administration insiders, and intelligence officers. It specifically examines the role of an individual whom a Manhattan federal judge ruled could be a Saudi government agent. This figure provided assistance to two hijackers upon their arrival in the United States. The narrative includes testimony from a neighbor of the hijackers and a 9/11 widow who lobbied to overturn a Presidential veto to hold the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia accountable.
Dan Clarke, Factual Commissioning Editor at BBC Radio 4, confirmed the series features eyewitnesses to the unresolved dimensions of the attacks. The production incorporates previously unbroadcast material and new evidence regarding the concealment of key operational details.
The release schedule is split across two platforms. The first five episodes are available on BBC Sounds starting 29 August. The linear broadcast begins on BBC Radio 4 at 1.45pm on Monday 31 August, with subsequent episodes airing daily. The final five episodes, numbered six through ten, will be released on BBC Sounds on Monday 7 September. This project marks a continued partnership between Jane McMullen and the BBC investigative unit. The series examines the case against Saudi Arabia twenty five years after the events of 2001.
