BBC One, BBC One Northern Ireland, and BBC iPlayer will premiere the six part dark comedic drama Tall Tales & Murder in autumn 2026. The series is a co-commission from BBC Northern Ireland and RTÉ in association with Screen Ireland. It is produced by Avalon in association with Metropolitan Pictures.
The production is created by Stuart Carolan and Chris Addison. It is based on the nine book Dublin Trilogy written by Caimh McDonnell. The plot follows a nurse, played by Ella Lily Hyland, and a car thief, played by Casey Walsh, who encounter a comatose patient identified as gangster Grinner McNair, played by Aidan Gillen. The narrative combines a modern crime plot involving kidnapping and bootlegging with an 8th Century storyline featuring Vikings and buried treasure.
The cast includes Philippa Dunne as Ma Baker, Packy Lee as Wesley Swanson, Brian Doherty as Bunny Ryan, and Aisling O'Sullivan as the Matron. Filming for the series took place in the Republic of Ireland. The commission was handled by David Crean and Dermot Horan at RTÉ, alongside Eddie Doyle and Jason Butler for the BBC.
Avalon also produces Breeders, Starstruck, and Catastrophe. Metropolitan Pictures produced KIN. The series consists of six episodes.
