BBC Bitesize Scotland has released ten educational guides for secondary school pupils to support the Film and Screen curriculum. This collaboration with Screen Scotland provides materials covering ten filmmaking elements, including narrative structure, camera technique, sound, lighting, production design and editing. The guides include key terms and examples from film and television production.

Studio Something produced a series of bespoke films to accompany the guides. These films are narrated by Beth Wallace and feature pupils from Portobello High School in Edinburgh. The content includes instructional videos on creative choices and specific challenges for students to apply filmmaking techniques.

Hayley Valentine, Director of BBC Scotland, and David Smith, Director of Screen Scotland, confirmed the launch of these resources. The materials align with the national rollout of Film and Screen into the Curriculum for Excellence. This curriculum applies to all pupils in Scotland aged three to 18, who are entitled to learn film and screen as a practical expressive arts subject.

Production has started on a separate suite of BBC Bitesize Film and Screen resources specifically for primary school pupils. These primary level materials are scheduled for publication in early 2027. The current secondary resources are available via the free BBC Bitesize online study platform. Screen Scotland, Education Scotland and the Scottish Government launched the national rollout of the Film and Screen curriculum in 2025.
