Channel 4 has commissioned Joe and James: Boys to Men, a four-part comedy travelogue starring Joe Thomas and James Buckley. The series, produced by Idle Industries in conjunction with Fudge Park, will follow the The Inbetweeners duo as they hit the road to navigate the specifics of midlife.

The programme centres on the pair's attempt to define adulting, a task made urgent by Thomas having recently turned forty and Buckley approaching the same milestone next year. Their journey involves seeking unconventional answers to questions about social expectations and personal boundaries in their forties. The dynamic relies on their contrasting approaches to life; Thomas adopts an introspective, esoteric perspective, while Buckley offers a straight-talking, no-nonsense counterpoint. This friction drives the narrative as they explore what is socially acceptable for them to be doing now that they are considered grown up.

Channel 4 Senior Commissioning Editor Vivienne Molokwu oversaw the commission, supported by Head of Entertainment Steven Handley. Executive producers Will Macdonald and Damon Beesley led the development from Idle Industries. The series marks a return for the pair to the channel where they first gained prominence as Simon and Jay. Macdonald noted that the project allows the audience to witness the duo's genuine friendship and differing perspectives on life. The commission builds on the popularity of their podcast and previous television work, capitalising on the enduring chemistry between the two actors. Fudge Park handles the production alongside Idle Industries, ensuring the show maintains the observational comedy style that defined their earlier collaborative projects.
