Based on Nick Arnold and Tony De Saulles’ Scholastic novels, a lovable family attempts to stage a spectacular science show. The ambition rarely survives contact with reality. On-screen chaos becomes the norm, not the exception. Backstage rows blaze with unexpected ferocity, whilst the practical effects descend into gooey slapstick. The format assumes that scientific demonstration and domestic dysfunction are mutually reinforcing. The spectacle is the point, even when the spectacle is entirely self-inflicted. The kids want to educate; the adults want to survive. The result is a performance where the experiment is the family dynamic itself, and the only variable that remains constant is the level of mess.
